Penny Casselman [00:00:00]:
I don't know about you, but I don't like being told what to do. I guess I still have that 5 year old rebel inside of me when it's time to clean my room. But what I've learned over the years is that what you think about you bring about. Hence Jen Sincero with you are a badass. Brendon Bouchard with hey striver. And now Penny Casselman in Pivot with Passion, has the director. Welcome to the Pivot with Passion podcast. Hi.
Penny Casselman [00:00:40]:
I'm Penny Casselman. I believe everyone is deserving of a phenomenal life. Regardless of where you came from, life is what you make of it. And when you learn to pivot with passion, your world explodes with opportunities. Go grab your favorite beverage, and let's shake things up as we explore how to pivot with passion. Hello, my friend, or should I say hello, director. I've been thinking about this a lot since the day I started this podcast. You'll often hear me refer to you as, hello, friend.
Penny Casselman [00:01:21]:
Welcome, friend. Hey, friend. And, yes, I do hope that one day we meet in person. We shake hands. We exchange some ideas, some thoughts, and that we truly do develop something deeper than just this connection that we have right now, which is me sharing my thoughts and ideas with you through this podcast. But one of the things I have found through my years of personal development is that words hold so much power, especially when they're used over and over again, and they can impact how we view the world, how we view ourselves. As I was thinking about what other word could I use instead of friend? Because although it is a term of endearment, I want you to feel powerful after our discussions each week. And I started to think about the people that I look to as mentors and teachers and leaders in my own life and what they call the people that follow them.
Penny Casselman [00:02:30]:
One of them is Jen Sincero. She calls everyone a badass. Okay. So let's just compare the two. Hey, friend. Hey, badass. Hello. Which one has you stepping up, ripping off your t shirt like Superman ready to take on anything that confronts you? Yeah.
Penny Casselman [00:02:52]:
Being a badass. Then I thought of Brendon Bouchard, and he calls all of us strivers. And I thought that is so empowering to me because his belief in my abilities, boundless. He believes we are all striving. We are all learning. We are all growing into the best version of ourselves. That's why I am fully embracing the idea of the director because I've had it in my repertoire this whole entire time since the first day I started this podcast. That was in my keynote address where I talk about a red marker moment that is comprised of belief, action, and vision.
Penny Casselman [00:03:40]:
Those are the three core tenets of a red marker moment, and I talked about them at length in episode two7, which I will link to in the show notes. So if it's been a while since you've heard that episode or just want a refresher or maybe this is the first time you're hearing about these three ideas, hop back over there and take a listen. Because when you have a 100% belief in yourself, when you have committed action, and you have set a vision for yourself, when all three of those come together, that is when you experience a red marker moment. And it is possibly the most powerful thing in your life Because in that moment, you are putting yourself first and becoming the director of your life. Because who else holds all the power but a director? Think of them in a movie who gets to cut scenes, who gets to tell actors and actresses what to do, who can rearrange things, improvise, cut, call action. Who has belief bigger than everyone on the set but the director? Because they have the vision of what their efforts will finally deliver. They have belief that the people that they brought together to make it happen combined with his vision are going to become masterful. And who else embodies the word action like a director? And so my friend, I want you to step in to that director because every day, every moment, every situation, you have choices.
Penny Casselman [00:05:37]:
And you get to decide. As the director of your life, where you want to put your focus, what options before you you want to enter attain and pursue, and you get to build the team around you that supports you. So with open arms, I am bestowing that term upon you because you are the director of your life. And that's what I'm gonna get into as we progress through this episode. I wanna share a habit that I have started using that is so powerful, and it uses this concept of phrasing and words and how they move us into action, how they keep us focused, and how they help us level up in any and every area of our life. And I can't wait to share it with you. It's time for a clarity cocktail. You know that very recently, in fact, I talked about this in the last episode, I was visiting a friend in New York City and the first night I was there, I happened to eat at a restaurant called Oscar Wilde.
Penny Casselman [00:06:56]:
Today as I was looking for a clarity cocktail, I went, Let me look up and see if Oscar Wilde had any words of wisdom for us, and I fell in love with this one. We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at stars, love it, for a couple reasons. 1, it helps us realize that we are all in the same place together. We will never know the struggles that someone else is going through. People we pass on the street, people we see at the grocery store, even some of our friends are going through some things that we will never fully know or understand. And in this quote, he acknowledges it. We are all in the gutter. But here's where the glimmer of hope comes in.
Penny Casselman [00:07:50]:
But some of us are looking at the stars. And I believe wholeheartedly that is where our power of choice comes in. I'm a firm believer in every minute of every day in every situation. We have a choice in how we respond, what we choose to do. And although we are all in the gutter, we can still choose to look up at the stars. I can tell you as I was going through my cancer journey, there were many days where I was in the gutter. Absolutely didn't wanna deal with any of it. But more often than not, I chose, as Oscar Wilde said, to look at the stars.
Penny Casselman [00:08:36]:
When I walked into the cancer care center each week, I was surrounded by people with cancer. No one goes to the cancer care center if you're feeling good. And although we collectively were all in the gutter, every day I walked in I chose to smile because that smile could have sparked one moment of joy for someone who was in the gutter and couldn't look up. So as you move through this week, think about this quote. We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars. And share a smile, share an acknowledgment, have gratitude in your choice to show up not only for yourself each day, but to share a sliver of hope or joy with someone else might make all the difference in the world for that person. So I'll read the quote one more time. We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.
Penny Casselman [00:09:40]:
Oscar Wilde. And now back to the episode. Cheers. Circling back to this idea of you being the director of your life with that placard holding it up ready to call action, picking a fabulous team around yourself and setting your vision. My friend, there is no way but up in your life when you truly stand and claim your role as the director. So at the top, I talked about how some of my mentors refer to their students. And I currently have a high performance coach. And it hit me not that long ago how powerful the name of his program is.
Penny Casselman [00:10:27]:
Because in essence, it's kind of life coaching. And if someone would say, oh, Penny, what are you what are you doing right now for personal development? Oh, I hired a life coach. Okay. But if someone says, Penny, what are you doing? And I say, I got a high performance coach. Does that not have a different feeling in your body just by saying, I have a life coach. I have a high performance coach. Honestly, Brendan, if you're listening, fabulous. That that is what you called the program.
Penny Casselman [00:11:02]:
Because I know for me, I stand a little taller when I think about it. I don't mess around with the homework I have. I don't not show up for what needs to be done when I work with my coach because I'm high performance, baby. Right? And so I want you, the director, to harness the power in that word. Now I don't know about you, but I don't like being told what to do. I guess I still have that 5 year old rebel inside of me when it's time to clean my room. But what I've learned over the years is that what you think about you bring about. Hence, Jen Sincero with you are a badass.
Penny Casselman [00:11:50]:
Brendon Bouchard with hey striver and now Penny Casselman, Pivot with Passion as the director. Now if you don't believe me when I say what you think about you bring about, I'm gonna challenge you for the next 5 days to find time to do the activity I'm about to share with you. A couple weeks ago my coach suggested that I install a new habit. So for me I felt heavy, right? I don't like being told what to do. Suddenly I'm being told you need to install a new habit and you need to ask yourself these three questions every single morning before you get out of bed. Now luckily for me, that's easy because I don't like to get out of bed. So if there is any excuse for me to lay there for one extra minute was not a hard lift for me to accept. But here are the 3 questions that I want you to ask yourself every day for the next 5 days and see what it does to your attitude for the day, for your focus, and for you claiming that director role.
Penny Casselman [00:13:07]:
1st, what are you grateful for? twond, what are you gonna be great at today? And 3, who needs you on your a game? So those 3 questions again. What are you grateful for? What are you going to be great at today? And who needs you on your a game? Do you see how asking those three questions first thing in the morning before you pick up the phone, before you look at email, before you talk to anyone, before the onslaught of your day begins, before things can get derailed, thrown out of whack, run off course, those three questions can anchor you into a mindset to help you claim your director role for the day. I realize some of these questions may seem uncomfortable. I know for me when I first started doing a gratitude practice, honestly, there were days where every morning I said, I'm grateful for my bed or I'm grateful for my house. And those were things I was grateful for over and over and over. But what happens is over time I started branching out a little bit. And the minute my brain got used to being grateful for something the first time I woke up, the floodgate started to open every morning. And instead of just giving one thing I was grateful for, I started listing several.
Penny Casselman [00:14:38]:
The second question is, what do I wanna be great at today? My friend, the sky is the limit on this. There are some days I wake up and say, I wanna be great at organization today, because maybe yesterday, I was feeling overwhelmed with chaos on my desk or on my schedule or in the kitchen. Side note, I always be in my kitchen to look really clean. I digress. But in that moment that you declare what you're going to be great at today completely sets you up to move forward with purpose and passion and persistence. Oh, I'm very proud of myself for getting 3 p's in a row without even having written it down. But you'll find over time that you learn from the day before, maybe what you weren't so great at, you wanna pick that up and carry it forward with you the next day. And the third question really helps you turn the focus off of yourself and on to helping others.
Penny Casselman [00:15:42]:
For me, the person I said I needed to show up for with my a game was you, my director. You needed me to show up on my a game so that I would record the podcast, edit appropriately, and post to be ready on Wednesday morning. Being the director of your life means that you have got to train your brain to show up for you, to support you, and help move you forward in your pursuit of a phenomenal life. And my friend, since you are the director, there is no reason you can't have a phenomenal life because every choice is in your control. In the show notes, you'll find those 3 questions so that you can write them down and start putting them into practice tomorrow. I chose to write those 3 questions on an index card that I leave right next to my bed. And every morning I get up, I look at that card and answer those three questions. I hope that over the next week, you find the magic in installing this new habit, in claiming your role as the director in your life because I believe in you.
Penny Casselman [00:17:02]:
And if no one has told you yet today, you're doing amazing at this thing called life, and your future is so bright. It is waiting for you to throw your arms around it, and the best way to start doing that is to hold up your placard and call action. Please don't forget that you can get your own free red marker.
