Penny Casselman [00:00:08]:
Welcome to the Pivot with Passion podcast. Hi. I'm Penny Casselman. I believe everyone is deserving of a phenomenal life, and that life starts when you grab a red marker and claim what you truly desire. Regardless of where you came from, where you're at, or where you think you're edit. Life is what you make of it, and when you learn to pivot with passion, your world explodes with opportunities. Go grab your favorite beverage, and let's shake things up as we explore how to pivot with passion. Hello.
Penny Casselman [00:00:47]:
Hello, my friend. Hey. That's a nice red marker you have there. What what's that? You don't have a red marker? Friend, we need to fix that pronto. Now maybe you missed it, but in the last episode, I offered everyone a free red marker for leaving a review of Pivot with Passion on whatever platform you use. I routinely check Apple. That is my platform of choice. But, my friend, let me tell you, these are the coolest markers ever.
Penny Casselman [00:01:24]:
Not only do they say my red marker moment on them. Oh, yes. They're branded, but you can't get them anywhere else. These will be the OG red markers. You might be thinking, well, I don't know what to say for my review. Well, since last week, a new one came in from Hanimation, and let me share it with you. She writes, Penny's passion and expertise shines through each episode. She somehow knows exactly what I need to hear each week, and I love her for it.
Penny Casselman [00:02:03]:
Cheers to grabbing that red marker and a good cocktail and claiming a phenomenal life. Hannah mation, thank you so much for that review. You, my friend, have a red marker coming your way. So if you would like to get your hands on your own red marker, compliments of me. Simply leave a review and then fill out the form on my website. I will link to that in the show notes Because as you guessed it, I just am gonna need to know where to send it. I thank you in advance for your support of this show. So let's dive in to the meat of what I'm talking about.
Penny Casselman [00:02:49]:
So we are at day 10 of a new year, and I'm curious how you're doing. You know, I read somewhere that most New Year's resolutions are discarded by day 32, but secretly 68% of those people do it sooner. So my friend, we are a 3rd of the way in to quitting your resolution. So are you feeling strong about what you're doing? Are you feeling excited for what lays ahead? Are you anxious because you feel like you've already failed or have set yourself up for failure. Look. No judgment here whatsoever. I have most certainly been on every side of a resolution. Having said that, however, I've realized a few things that might help you make 2024, your year for success.
Penny Casselman [00:03:47]:
So stick with me, and we'll circle back to explore those in a moment. It's time for a clarity cocktail. Oh, I have a treat for you today. 2 quotes that I found that help embody and shine light on resolutions and goals as we start this new year. The first one reads, a person who never made a mistake, Never tried anything new, Albert Einstein. And the second, I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced 1 kick 10,000 times, Bruce Lee. I love both of those quotes. When it comes to resolutions or goals that you have set for 2024, first and foremost.
Penny Casselman [00:04:52]:
You deserve a virtual high five for even throwing your intention out in the universe Because it can be scary to declare what you want. It can be nerve racking to think of a big goal that you have. And I can guarantee every single person, myself included, who creates goals, who sets expectations for the new year. Always has this nagging thought in the back. What if I fail? And pulling from last week's episode. Oh, but darling, what if you fly? Right? So first, if you have made resolutions, have big goals set out for 2024, virtual high five. We're acknowledging with those goals and with those resolutions. We will make mistakes.
Penny Casselman [00:05:47]:
And if Albert Einstein said it, it must be true. But whenever we try something new, whenever we declare something that we want, yeah, it can be scary, and, yeah, we could fail, but we learn every time we have a misstep. But then I love what Bruce Lee says in his quote, and that is I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced 1 kick 10,000 times. I love how that layers on to the Albert Einstein quote because the Bruce Lee quote embraces consistency. He shares that practicing something once doesn't make it happen. Practicing something once doesn't make you fully effective, it's just a step in the right direction. And so taking these 2 quotes, knowing that you're going to make a mistake, but also knowing that with mistakes, consistent repetition, I want you to know that whatever you have declared for this year, whatever you have set your sights on to do or to stop doing or to let go of whatever you envision is possible, but it does come with knowing mistakes will be made, but consistency is the key to mastery. And with those 2 quotes on your side for this year, you can make anything happen.
Penny Casselman [00:07:26]:
And now back to the episode. Cheers. Circling back to making 2024, your year. There are 3 things that I've learned over the years that I wanted to share with you in the hopes that. Maybe they will resonate with you, and one of them might guide you to achieving that goal that you've wanted or releasing something you've wanted to let go of. 1st, and I know you're gonna say, I knew you were gonna say that. Pick up your red marker. Oh, yes, my friend.
Penny Casselman [00:08:02]:
I had to plug it again to get your own, leave a review of the show, and fill out the form on my site. Okay. So now let's dive in to the 3 things that I have learned that I hope you can carry with you, noodle on, and implement in your life. 1st, surround yourself with supportive people. I don't know if you have ever had this experience where you were so excited just start something, or you had a dream and you are sharing it with someone. And after you shared it with them. They looked at you maybe with a puzzled look on their face and said something like, Well, that's interesting, or that sounds hard, or what made you wanna do that? Is now the right time? Ugh. The buzzkill.
Penny Casselman [00:08:55]:
I cannot tell you how many times in my life I have been excited to start something and shared it with someone else and receive that type of feedback. Talk about a gut punch to deflate my dreams. So with this caution of surround yourself with supportive people, make sure that you are managing your expectations when you share what you want your goals or dreams to be. For my most audacious goals, I reserve those for my tight inner circle who I know will support me every step of the way. No matter how outlandish, crazy, huge My goals are, I share them with people who will cheer me on. And I know if I don't do that, then I need to be prepared for the, well, that's interesting comments that I get back. I've gotten much better at letting those hype of comments roll off my back because I know with each negative or doubting comment, It comes from a place of that person wanting to protect me. They don't wanna see me fail.
Penny Casselman [00:10:16]:
They don't wanna see me agonize and practice something 10,000 times. They want to see me happy and coasting along. So that is the first thing that I wanted to share about making 2024 year a year. The second is realizing time is irrelevant. At the top of the episode said most people will card, their resolutions within 32 days, and 68% of those actually say they do it sooner. What is 32 days. I realize there's a lot built around January through December. That's the way calendars are constructed.
Penny Casselman [00:11:02]:
We have, at the end of the year, Thanksgiving, we have Christmas, we have New Year's. All of these holidays building up to this one momentum moment where we can shut down everything that happened the last year and look forward to something new, like I shared in the clarity cocktail with Albert Einstein, a person who never made a mistake, never tried anything new. You're going to make mistakes, especially if you are going for something you've never done before, you've never had before, you've never seen before, or maybe you've done it before, but you want to reach a new level of mastery. There will be mistakes, and then you layer in Bruce Lee where I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. Be the person who, without regard to the calendar, keep practicing even if you fall off the wagon and you don't do something on a day that you said you would, reach out to those people that you surround yourself with that are your cheerleaders. January is just another month. I will tell you in working in corporate America. There was 1 company whose fiscal calendar started in March, and I completely understood why they did that, But it was just very odd.
Penny Casselman [00:12:24]:
But, again, who holds the red marker? You do. So what if the 1st 30 days of the year, You completely let every goal, aspiration fall to the wayside for whatever reason. So what? February 1st? Pick it up again. Start becoming consistent. Understand that you're going to make mistakes, Because giving up in the 1st month when there's 11 months left in the year, that would just be silliness. So then the third thing in making 2024 your year is do you really want to do it? I had mentioned in the past that I had started my coaching business. And for a year, I kept myself busy and doing all the things, but nothing ever happened. When I really got honest with myself, I realized I didn't want to do it.
Penny Casselman [00:13:21]:
Like, it sounded good, but I wasn't committed to making it work. Should you find yourself at the end of January tossing aside your goals and aspirations. There's no need to pick them back up and share your thoughts with other people if it's not something you wanna do, and that is completely okay. Completely okay because it means you've grown, you've expanded. You realize what you want and what you don't. My friend, I don't know what this episode length is going to clock in at, but my normal cadence is to record on Monday, edit on Tuesday, and release on Wednesday. Well, I can tell you that it's Tuesday evening, and this is the first time in the last 36 hours that I have even felt like sitting in a chair in front of a microphone. So one, I am very thankful that I do not make this Podcast, a video as well, and put it on YouTube.
Penny Casselman [00:14:25]:
I am looking rough, and I'm feeling equally as rough. I spent all day in bed on Monday and for the most part, most of today in bed. I am rounding the corner and, you know, making 2024 my year is that I am committed to this podcast of publishing every week. Having said that, you might say, well, Penny, if you were sick, if you really don't feel well, why are you just do it a day late? And I would agree with you because if I truly felt as bad today as I did yesterday, this would not be coming out on Wednesday. However, what I've also learned from this is maybe I need to have a backup in the wings waiting for just a moment like this where I would much prefer to not be editing and sitting upright in a chair for a podcast, but rather resting. And so when I look at the 3 things that I've learned over the years, number 3, do you really wanna do it? Yeah. I do. I really wanna keep doing this podcast.
Penny Casselman [00:15:33]:
And my friend, would love your support with a review. Link in the show notes if you'd like to get your free red marker. I'm surrounding myself with amazing people in my circle who support me any time that I need it. And with regards to time being irrelevant, I started the podcast in October. I didn't wait for January. I just ripped the Band Aid off and started running, and it was the right thing. That was the right thing for me to do. Get my feet wet before the crazy holiday season hit, kickoff January, and then reflect on all the learnings that I've had since the 1st episode.
Penny Casselman [00:16:15]:
So my friend, Thank you for tuning in again. I so appreciate you. I love showing up for you.
