Penny Casselman [00:00:08]:
Welcome to the Pivot with Passion podcast. Hi. I'm Penny Casselman. I believe everyone is deserving of a phenomenal life, and that life starts when you grab a red marker and claim what you truly desire. Regardless of where you came from, where you're at, or where you think you're edit. Life is what you make of it, and when you learn to pivot with passion, your world explodes with opportunities. Go grab your favorite beverage, and let's shake things up as we explore how to pivot with passion. My friend, happy new year.
Penny Casselman [00:00:49]:
Wherever you are joining from, we are 3 days into 20 24. And I'm curious what emotions that evokes for you. Is it relief that 2023 is behind you. Is it trepidation because, oh my gosh, what does 2024 have in store for me? Or is it excitement that 2024 is your year to make things happen? A couple years ago, I made so many resolutions. Anyone looking in could have told me, Penny. I think you are very much overestimating what you can physically accomplish in a year because a lot of the things I had put on my list required new knowledge or new information. And just given the daily demands of life, not layering on the unexpected. I simply didn't allow myself enough space to make my goals happen.
Penny Casselman [00:01:53]:
I shared in a previous episode how my main bath renovation that I thought was going to take me 2 months Ended up evolving into a 2 year project. I learned a lot during that process, but it also taught me a really valuable lesson, and that is give yourself grace, give yourself space to make any goal or dream happen. I know for me, nothing is ever fast enough. I want everything done yesterday. And although I want everything done yesterday, I know that that is simply not possible, so I'm getting much better at pacing myself throughout the year and planning. As we go through this episode today, I want to lean on the idea of using your red marker to forge a bright, testful phenomenal 2024. And the twist here is that you can use your red marker to begin something or end something. So go grab your favorite beverage, cozy up, and let's do this episode.
Penny Casselman [00:03:17]:
It's time for a clarity cocktail. Today, I wanna share a poem with you, and the title is, what if I fall? There is a freedom waiting for you on the breezes of the sky, and you ask, what if I fall? Oh, but my darling, what if you fly by Erin Hansen. You may have seen this poem as a means and quotes where it takes the last 2 lines of the poem and reflects what if I fall. Oh, but my darling, what if you fly? I thought how appropriate is this for the start of a brand new year because what is encapsulated in this four line poem is truly coming from a fierce advocate. Someone who believes in you more than you believe in yourself. Maybe it's someone with more wisdom, more life experience more knowledge, but in the same breath, they know you must believe it, that it can't be pushed on you. In this poem, they offer up the choice, a choice for you to choose what you want to believe. Let me read it again for you to savor.
Penny Casselman [00:04:40]:
There is a freedom waiting for you on the breezes of the sky. And you ask, what if I fall? Oh, but my darling, what if you fly? Did you get you get a little goosebumps? I did. So imagine if you could put your fears aside for a quiet moment. Then you could imagine living the life you've dreamt of. You'll be able to feel it in your bones. What are you doing? What does it look like? What does it smell like? What do you feel? What do you see? One of the magical things about envisioning your future, and that I would challenge you to try is to involve all 5 senses. The sense of touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste. Because just like a picture paints a 1,000 words, think about envisioning your future with all of those senses coming at you.
Penny Casselman [00:05:44]:
It's almost like sitting in a brand new car. Right? You could be blindfolded, but the minute you get in that car, you instantly know that. It is new. It is luxurious. It is waiting to be taken on an adventure just through the use of smell. As we move into this new year, my hope for you is that you embrace this poem and especially the 4th line. Don't think about what if I fall. I want you to envision what if you fly this year in 2024.
Penny Casselman [00:06:25]:
I want you to imagine living the life you've dreamt of and paint a picture using all 5 senses because then you can begin to act as if it's already arrived, which in turn helps you begin to take the actions that support court your grand vision and will be the guiding light for you as you move through this new year. I'm going to leave you with reading this poem one more time in the hopes that, 1, maybe you'll commit it to memory. Number 2. You'll be able to lean on it for this next week as you really start diving into the start of a new year. There was a freedom waiting for you on the breezes of the sky, and you ask, what if I fall? O, but my darling, what if you fly? And now back to the episode. Cheers. Circling back to the idea of using your red marker to begin or end something. One of the ideas that we probably all have carried with us from childhood into adulthood is the concept of using a red marker to show what's wrong.
Penny Casselman [00:07:40]:
Just like teachers would grade a paper, we get conditioned to seeing red as something we've done wrong. One of my most recent reviews of the podcast by Being Beth also called that out. And what we take from that is we start thinking that it will help us learn and steer clear of the mistake in the future. But when you see that red x, it leaves you feeling bad for having made the mistake in the 1st place and can lead to not even being able to see the corrected action that leads to a positive outcome. Right? It just shows you what's wrong. It doesn't then dive in and say, oh, instead of this, here's how you could have made it positive. And, again, it's no wonder that we have this association because at least for me as a gen x, My teachers most certainly use red to make sure that we could all see their comments. On the rare occasion it was an a plus, I was okay with it.
Penny Casselman [00:08:52]:
Any other time, maybe not so much. But we can stop looking at situations or choices as wrong or bad. Because just like the Clarity cocktail. We have the choice to focus on flying rather than falling. We can look at the opportunity ahead of us to grow, to expand, and fly using the breeze that is surrounding us all. Now since you can't really see a breeze, I like to substitute a red marker because red is certainly a color that catches your attention. So why not use it to fly instead of fall. Grab a red marker to claim your opportunity and choose what's gonna happen in 2024, an exercise that I would encourage you to try.
Penny Casselman [00:09:52]:
And because I'm feeling super creative today, I'm actually going to make a quick one sheet that you can print off. I will put a link to it in the show notes and use this very simple framework and a red marker to help you begin to think about where you want this new year to go. When you print off this sheet, you'll see that there are 4 core questions that it asks you. I would give yourself 30 minutes to complete this entire exercise. The first question is, what didn't serve you in 2023. And these are things that didn't work. Things that maybe you invited into your life, but found out they're just not quite living up to what you had hoped. The second question is, what supported you in 2023? What did you call into your life that made a big impact? List those things.
Penny Casselman [00:10:50]:
The next question is, what can you let go of in 2024? And the final question, what will you do more of in 2024. And then at the very bottom after you've completed those 4 quadrants is one simple question. Using all 5 senses, touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste, describe your vision or goal for 2024. And that, my friend, is where you get to describe in elaborate detail what lying looks like for you in 2024. Because, my friend, at the start of this new year, I truly want you to know that you hold the red marker. Not a teacher, not a stranger, you. And I want you to feel empowered to make new choices an embrace of beautiful vision for this year because I want you to make 2024 your best year ever. And I have a little surprise for you to help make that happen.
Penny Casselman [00:12:05]:
During the month of January of 2024, if you leave a review for the podcast, I will send you for free your own red marker. Oh, yes, my friend. And you cannot get these markers anywhere else. They are not yet for sale on my website. The only way for you to get your hands on one of these is to leave a review this month. I declared last year that my goal was to put a red marker in everyone's hand so that they could make their life phenomenal, and I invested in getting some markers made. You can see them on my Instagram feed, what they say, my red marker moment. And it is my hope that when you leave a review and then receive your red marker, that it will be a reminder for you that you hold the red marker.
Penny Casselman [00:13:15]:
You can make things Happen. You can let things go, and you can create a phenomenal future. Details for how to claim your free red marker from me will be found in the show notes. And side note, for those individuals who already left a review. A red marker is coming your way as well. Thank you, my friend, for starting this new year off with me. I'm excited for all the topics I have planned and look forward to diving in and exploring more of how in 2024, you can grab a red marker and say it with me, Pivot with Passion. Until next week, my friend, make it a great one.
